The Dolores Aboitiz Children’s Fund of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-DACF) continues its support to the Gualandi Effata School for the Hearing Impaired by providing financial assistance including uniform allowance, school supplies, and books for the 82 hearing impaired children for the School Year 2017-2018.
Gualandi Effata School for the Hearing Impaired is a special school employing the multi- sensorial approach to oral intervention for the children with hearing impairment. The goal of the school is to produce hearing impaired students who will be able to communicate orally without the use of sign language.
“It’s challenging to teach especially in the nursery level because they still don’t know how to speak and lip read. I can’t believe that because of me, they can now speak. It makes me wonder and ask myself if I am really the one who taught them how to speak,” Nursery class Teary Ma’am Veloso shared, recalling that the previous students who cannot even say their name before can slowly express themselves now.
When children enroll in the school, regardless of age, they will undergo the nursery class where they will be taught how to pronounce consonants and vowels. Throughout the school year, they will be taught how to speak words through different aural-oral skills approach. Their form of communication is through lip reading.
