Cancer Foundation in the Philippines

According to the Department of Health (DOH), cancer remains a key health priority in the Philippines. Cancer is the country’s third leading cause of morbidity and mortality. In a study by the National Institutes of Health through the Institute of Human Genetics, 189 in every 100,000 Filipinos have cancer. Further, four Filipinos die of cancer every hour, or 96 people every day.

To respond to the cancer epidemic, the DOH launched the Cancer Control Program in 1990, which effectively created the National Cancer Prevention and Control Action Plan. The action plan covers policy and standard development, advocacy and promotions, capacity building and resource mobilization, service delivery, information management and surveillance, and research and development. The goal is to respond to the growing epidemic while strengthening the advocacy and control programs.

Furthermore, the private sector is doing its part in pursuing cancer interventions at the grassroots level. For example, RAFI Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center, a cancer foundation in the Philippines, targets contributing to the decline in cancer statistics. The foundation firmly believes that winning the war on cancer starts with educating the citizens on how to prevent cancer. Aside from advocacy and education, the cancer foundation provides early detection through screening, treatment assistance, and patient support groups.
