Thirty years after its renaming was approved by the Cebu City Government, the street fronting two iconic buildings in the old Parian district is now formally called Eduardo Aboitiz (EJA) Street.
Three street markers bearing the new name were formally unveiled last July 19, 2017. These are found at the corner of Mabini and Eduardo Aboitiz Streets in Barangay Parian; and at the corners of Ballesteros and Eduardo Aboitiz Streets, and M. J. Cuenco Ave. and Eduardo Aboitiz, both in Barangay Tinago.
On the day of the unveiling, online maps also started reflecting the new name of the street, which was formerly called Lopez Jaena.
Representatives from the Aboitiz family, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), Cebu City Government, and barangays were around to lead and witness the unveiling.
Barangay Captains Raffy Briones of Tinago and Jeremias Nuñez of Parian unveiled the markers on each end of Eduardo Aboitiz Street. The Aboitiz family led by EJA’s wife Francisca, and son and RAFI president Jon Ramon Aboitiz (JRA), together with Cebu City officials, unveiled the marker at the corner of Eduardo Aboitiz and Ballesteros streets.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, in his message, paid tribute to EJA and thanked the Aboitiz family for contributing to the development of the city and for keeping their roots in Cebu.
Speaking on behalf of the family, JRA thanked the Cebu City Government for the distinct honor they bestowed on his father, something which he said would have made his grandfather Ramon and brother Roberto (REA) proud.
“Thank you for recognizing my father’s humanitarian and philanthropic contributions to the Cebuano community… We are happy and proud to be part of (Barangays) Tinago and Parian… and are extremely proud to be Cebuanos,” JRA said.
He also said that having the street named after his father serves as a constant reminder to the family and to RAFInians to continue the legacy of the Foundation’s founders and of REA, and to do it with great passion. He added that RAFI has plans to develop the area further to make it a nicer place “and to preserve the history and culture of Cebu.”
Also present during the event were RAFI Chief Operating Officer Dominica Chua, Rep. Raul del Mar (Cebu City north district), Cebu City Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella, and City Councilors Margarita Osmeña and Joel Garganera.
