Gil Corbes is an alumnus of the Kool Adventure Camp of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-KAC) – Camp 113. He is the founder of Lapis Ug Papel & Bigay Puso (KAC Change Projects), a former Supreme Student Government Coordinator, and current Prefect of Discipline for Liloan National High school and Boy Scout Coordinator of Arcelo Memorial National High School.
Having experienced the camp himself, he strives to prepare high school students to become future leaders of society.
The Difference RAFI-KAC Has Made
Gil Corbes was able to join RAFI-KAC Camp 113 back in 2006 through the invitation of his wife who was a former RAFI employee.
It was easy for Gil to adjust in the camp since he knew most of the staff, as they were colleagues of his wife. For him, KAC has made a huge difference in his life, which has trickled down to the students he handles in his various other roles.
“There has been a big difference in my life since I joined the camp. And I noticed a change in my students as well, particularly the student leaders that I handle, they have become more mature, responsible and aware of what is happening in the environment and in society,” Gil proudly shared.
His Meaningful Contribution to the RAFI-KAC
For Gil, helping the Supreme Student Government (SSG) in their community organizing initiatives is one of his most important contributions to the camp. He created the very first Kool Adventure Camp club organization in the Municipality of Liloan and was able to conduct numerous immersions in different communities within the municipality. This includes activities involving formal and informal daycare centers, street children and environmental activities.
“Before going to KAC, I would inform them (the campers) to think of a certain project or activity that is beneficial to the community that they could implement,”
“We also expose these students to different communities in Liloan where they get to see for themselves the difficulties and/or realities on the ground which helps them decide on a project or initiative to undertake,” he shared.
On His Influence for Change
Gil is proud that he has his own contribution to nation-building through the honing of former student leaders that are now in the field and the workforce.
“It feels good when you look back and see how far these students have gone, knowing that I have somehow influenced them… they are now educators and responsible members of society,”
“I can honestly say that I am reaping the rewards of my efforts now because instead of me pushing them to come up with different initiatives, they are the ones creating and developing projects to help people and communities,”
Currently, Gil wants to involve teachers in the process of making a positive change in students by going through and experiencing the camp themselves, as he did. He firmly believes that teachers can be more effective in shaping future leaders after experiencing the camp.
Gil and His Biggest Achievement and Motivation
Two of the programs that Gil established are Lapis at Papel and Bigay Puso programs. Lapis at Papel is conducted every Saturday morning for the daycare centers in Catarman, Mahayahay, Pamutunggan and Gawad Kalinga by Alumni campers, while Bigay Puso is dependent on the Supreme Student Government’s schedule.
Gil humbly says that his motivation has always been God, and the late Mr. Roberto “Bobby” Aboitiz & his principles.
Gil recalled that in the many times he encountered the late Mr. Bobby Aboitiz, he would always ask how Liloan is doing, about how the students are doing and their leadership camps and activities.
“He never failed to ask about what we were doing for Liloan, and that motivated me. Because of Sir Bobby, Ms. Amaya [Aboitiz] and RAFI, we (Liloan) were able to receive a daycare center,”
Gil and On His Greatest Challenge, And On Being a Camp Alumnus
Gil admitted that finances, particularly funding, is a challenge for them especially in introducing RAFI-KAC to the school. To address this, he ensures that he presents to the school board and PTA officers the benefits of joining the camp, which in the end get to be understood and accepted by the school.
“I explain to them where the money will be spent on, and at the end of the year, I make sure everything is liquidated, transparency is important,”
When asked on how he feels being a RAFI-KAC alumnus, Gil said that he considers it as a huge responsibility; a responsibility towards his fellowmen, the community, the nation and ultimately, God.
“I want to continue my legacy of helping people in the community that I serve,” Gil said.
On His Greatest Lesson
Gil believes that making use of one’s time to help others is a noble act, and in sharing what you have.
“We only live once, that is why we have to make use of our time to help people regardless of the circumstances… time is running out,”
He also shared his favorite verse of scripture that guides him in his mission to help mold students into young leaders, “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his soul?”
“Be what you are; be yourself,” Gil shared. #IAMRAFI
