Twenty cancer survivors from Northern Cebu who are engaged with the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Care (EJACC) Program recently participated in a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Session (MHPSS) in Coco Palms Resort, Danao, Cebu. The session aimed to reduce feelings of isolation, strengthen social support systems, and help participants navigate their cancer journey with renewed courage and a deeper sense of belonging.

Understanding that healing goes beyond physical treatment, EJACC emphasizes the importance of creating safe, supportive communities. This recent psychosocial support activity was held in collaboration with the Wellbeing Cluster of the Central Visayas Network of NGOs (CESVISNET), who served as facilitators.

The session aimed to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Enhanced emotional well-being
  • A safe and open space for sharing
  • Strengthened coping mechanisms
  • Development of peer support networks
  • Improved overall quality of life

For Angelie A. Arengo, one of the participants, it was her first time joining such an activity. “I was very excited to come here, and I was really happy to be with others who battled cancer just like me. We were able to talk to one another, share our experiences, and even give some advice. For those who were thinking of stopping their treatment, we were able to encourage them to continue, with the help of RAFI,” she shared.

Angelie underwent breast cancer surgery late last year and is currently undergoing post-surgery treatments. She offered heartfelt words for those also fighting the “big C”: “The first step to healing is acceptance. If you don’t accept your situation, you won’t get better.” She recalled meeting a fellow patient who looked downcast after every radiation session. Moved by empathy, Angelie gave her a hug, understanding the weight of what they were going through. She reminded her and others that every radiation session is a blessing, a step closer to healing. “We should be happy,” she said, “because we’re not alone. There are others like us who are fighting, too.”

Cancer does not only affect patients; it also significantly impacts their families and caregivers. Recognizing this, the facilitators encouraged the participants to bring a caregiver or family member to the session. It offered a space for them to share their experiences and learn from one another about how to support and care for their loved ones throughout the cancer journey.

EJACC is a legacy program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) that supports cancer patients diagnosed with Stage II cancer and below. Beyond providing financial assistance, EJACC advocates for early detection and screening—critical steps in increasing cancer survival rates. The program accompanies patients throughout their healing journey, offering holistic support that extends up to five years post-treatment, including mental health services.

Through initiatives like this, EJACC continues to uphold its commitment to holistic cancer care—championing not just survival, but the overall well-being of patients and their support systems.
