Adult, and pediatric patients in the Visayas in need of rehabilitation medicine can now easily access a holistic and patient-centered rehabilitation center at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center Regional Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (VSMMC-RPMRC).
With a larger capacity to serve the public, the VSMMC-RPMRC provides a larger, inclusive, and affordable rehab facility in the region. A future home to rehabilitation medicine doctors who wish to complete their residency training, the facility hopes to also increase the number of practicing doctors in Visayas.
In April 2022, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) through the support of the Aboitiz-Moraza Family provided a grant to VSMMC for the completion of Phase 2 of the Regional Rehabilitation Center Renovation Project.
“Our efforts today will try to ease the burden of disability. The suffering of pain and helplessness. […] For me one of the deepest satisfactions is in musing that perhaps decades from now, when most everyone then has forgotten all of us who set this Center up or why we did it, that it will still be easing the burden of disability for someone in need of a place where trained doctors and healthcare workers are practicing Rehabilitation Medicine and Occupational Therapy,” shared Jose Antonio Aboitiz, representative of the Aboitiz-Moraza Family.
The project covers the construction, refurbishment, and renovation of several services and sections of the rehabilitation center, which includes the Pediatric Occupational Therapy, Adult Physical Dysfunction OT, and a portion of the Adult Physical Therapy sections, and the Sensory Integration of Pediatric Patients, Activities of Daily Living Training, and Orthosis and Prosthesis Factory services, as well as the Working Lounge for PT, OT, and Speech Therapists, Patients’ Waiting Lounge, and Built-in Oxygen Supply for the Rehab Ward.

“The renovation of this facility and the upgrade of its equipment is really a great help for VSMMC to continue its commitment in providing wholesome, efficient, and responsive healthcare service. To the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., thank you for partnering with us in realizing your vision of upholding the dignity of man by working with communities. Thank you for your great contribution for the VSMMC’s Regional Physical Medicine Rehabilitation Center. We greatly appreciate your support in our institution,” said Dr. Gerardo M. Aquino Jr., Medical Director of VSMMC.
To signify project completion, the special grant turnover ceremony was held in the Rehabilitation Center to celebrate its goals and hopes. With its completion, the center aims to provide high quality and efficient patient care especially to middle to low-income families, specifically from far-flung locations and far-off islands. Opportunities for affordable spinal and leg braces (orthoses) and artificial limbs (prostheses) will also be made available to the public at a government-socialized cost.
